Socfindo’s Ladies Association grow organic herbs and vegetables in Berastagi

Organic farming is a form of cultivation that relies on natural and biological processes without the use of synthetic chemicals such as fertilizers and pesticides (except permitted materials). Therefore, this cultivation technique is known as being environmentally friendly and sustainable, targeting quality production rather than mass production. The main goal of organic farming is to provide agricultural food products that are healthy and produced in a safe way, while not damaging the environment.

There are many reasons why someone might decide to choose organic products: it could range from both a consumption point of view such as being more tasty and healthy but also from an environmental point of view, to avoid pesticides and a concern for the environment. The organic movement does promote healthier soil and it stands to reason that in the long run, organic farming maintains soil fertility.

Considering the above benefits, Socfindo ladies also grow herbs and organic vegetables in Berastagi. This town is part of the Karo district, having specific weather conditions that are suitable for growing vegetables and fruits. Various kinds of vegetables and fruits are grown in Berastagi such as chicory, kale, radishes, broccoli, cauliflower, beets, parsley, strawberries, passion fruit and much more.

In addition to vegetables, herbal plants are also planted in Socfindo’s Berastagi garden such as Ashitaba (Angelica keiskei), Comfrey (Symphytum officinale), Chinese Mugwort (Artemisia argyi), Stevia (Stevia rebaudiana), Yellow Dock (Rumex crispus), Borage (Borago officinalis) etc.
