Overview
Sobralia macrantha is native to tropical America. This species is one of the twelve orchids that is recorded in Veracruz Medicinal Flora Database which is used in traditional medicine.

Agroecology
It grows best when kept in a cool part of the orchid house, the coldest temperature averaging between 10-15 °C . A light-free soil is suitable for this type of orchid, which should consist of a mixture of sandy peat and light loam.
Morphology
- Roots - thick, fleshy roots.
- Stem - erect, aggregate, terete, glabrous, jointed.
- Leaves - from every joint, patent reflexed, broad, lanceolate, rigid, much and very narrowly acuminate, almost caudate, plaited, the base forming a brown sheath around the stem.
- Flowers - very large, few on each stem, terminal, one flower (on each stem) is open at a time, purple-rose colour, sepals oblong, two lobed, crisped lamella, with a pale, somewhat heart-shaped yellow spot at the base. Column elongate, clavate, with a lateral tooth on each side, the anther at the top.
Cultivation
Vegetatively propagated by roots division.
