Agroecology

Golden oyster mushroom is a rotting fungus that feeds on hard woods such as oak, beech, elm, and other perennials. Its habitat is in areas with a warm climate and hardwood forests under trees. In Indonesia, areas with an altitude between 400 - 800 m above sea level and more than 800 m above sea level are suitable areas for oyster mushroom cultivation. Golden oyster mushrooms grow at room temperature and in warmer places. The need for sunlight is not much, but even though the intensity is low, sunlight is still needed for the development of spores-hyphae-mycelium. Without sunlight, the formation is not optimal. The growth of oyster mushrooms also requires high humidity, ranging from 80-90%. If the humidity is below 80% and lasts for several days, the fruiting body will experience dryness.

Morphology

  • Stems - cylindrical, short, white, often curved or bent, and about 20 - 50 mm long and 2 - 8 mm in diameter, positioned not centered (asymmetrically), but slightly to the side.
  • Fruit body - small, growing in clusters, bright yellow to golden brown in color with a dry velvety surface texture. Young hats are usually funnel shaped and with age they may fade to almost whitish and become more flattened in shape. The cap diameter ranges from 20 - 65 mm. The flesh is thin and white, with a mild taste and no pungent odor.
  • Gills - white, closely spaced, and spreads down the stem.
  • Spores - very small, light, cylindrical or elliptical, smooth.

  • Propagation through spores and tissue culture. Generally spores are dispersed by wind and a beetle.
  • Usually cultivated on grain, straw, or sawdust media.
