Overview

Oregon grape or Berberis bealei originates from China, and has been distributed in America, Europe and Asia. This plant is generally taken from the wild for local use as food and medicine. As a medicinal plant, B. bealei has long been used traditionally to treat various ailments throughout ancient times. It is an important herb and is commonly used in traditional Chinese medicine. However, in its use, caution is needed, because the berberine compounds contained in this plant, if used in small amounts have benefits as an effective drug, whereas if used in excessive amounts, it can cause vomiting, lower blood pressure, reduce heart rate, lethargy, and other adverse effects. This species also produces fruit that can be consumed both fresh and cooked. In addition, B. bealei is often planted by the community as an ornamental plant in gardens.
