Overview
Ampelocissus ascendiflora is native to Peninsula Malaysia (Melaka). Etymologically, the name Greek ampelos, vine; Greek kissos, ivy, referring to its resemblance to the genus Cissus; Latin scend, climbing; Latin flora, flower, referring to the growth form of this species. It is desirable for its ornamental flowers, foliage, and ornamental fruits. It is suitable for parks and gardens, growing on trellises and pergolas.

Agroecology
Grows on the fringes of lowland dipterocarp forests. Found on terrestrial (primary rainforest, secondary rainforest, disturbed area/open ground). It prefers moist soils, well-drained soils, and fertile loamy soils.
Morphology
- Stem - a longitudinally ridged stem, up to 3 mm across, often white tomentose when young, turning brown when older. The tendrils are simple and each has a prominent, ovate bract, similar to the stipules.
- Leaves - white-tomentose when young, turning brown below and sparsely hairy above when older. The leaf blade is ovate, 4.5–18.0 × 5.5–14 cm, and petiole 4.5–16.0 cm long, with entire or toothed margins.
- Flower - the inflorescence is a panicle of spikes, 13–21 cm long. The flower has red petals and a yellow disc. The flowering cluster develops opposite a leaf at the same node on the stem.
- Fruit - round berry is about 8 mm across with 2 seeds.
- Seed - about 7 × 6 mm.

Benefits
- The fruit is used in Chinese herbs. It is dried and milled into powder capsules. The medicine can slowly lower the blood sugar levels. It works by decreasing the liver's production of glucose.
