Overview
The plant has a distribution ranging from Peninsular Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia (Sumatra, Java, and Kalimantan). This plant is often harvested from nature to be used as a medicinal plant. In Indonesia, especially the Karo people, use the leaves of this plant to treat cancer and as an ingredient to make mineral concoctions. The uniqueness of the flowers, often makes this plant widely planted as an ornamental plant in the yard.

Agroecology
Can be found growing in places at altitudes ranging from the lowlands to 1,440 m above sea level and sometimes up to 1,520 m above sea level. Habitat types recorded include mixed dipterocarp forest, near rivers, and lowland freshwater swamp forest. Its growth likes shady conditions with partial shade.
Morphology
- Roots - taproot.
- Stems - dangling, green and purplish, not sap, round shape, rough surface, glabrous.
- Leaves - single with opposite arrangement, strands ovoid breech, oblong or ovoid, slightly thick fleshy texture, base rounded to wedge, flat edge, pointed tip, smooth surface, the top is dull green and the bottom is dark red purple.
- Flowers - arranged in inflorescences with the number of flowers 1 to 5, emerging from the tips or axils of the leaves, single symmetrical, have petals with a short tube at the base which are deep incised, varying from green to blackish red in color, the crown forms a slightly curved tube, the total length is about 1.6−2.9 cm, the outer side is green or greenish yellow, the crown lobe is green or green with a slightly blurred purple-brown center line on the inside with various patterns, the tips of the lobes are rounded, sparsely hairy. Stamens are 4 and longer than the corolla tube, with one additional sterile stamens, pistil with ovary ride, cream or green stalk, pale red head.
- Fruits - a cylindrical capsule, 11.5−40 cm long by 2.5−4 mm wide, brown when ripe.
- Seeds - have long hair like threads at one end, and at the hilar end.
