Overview
Widespread in southern China, throughout Southeast Asia (Burma to Papua New Guinea), to the Pacific Islands. This plant has been widely cultivated and planted as an ornamental plant in home yards, city parks, and offices. Apart from being an ornamental plant, it has various values ​​and functions for the community. In Bali, this type, especially the tuber, is used as an ingredient in the Human Yadnya ceremonial ritual, a sacred ceremony with purpose of maintaining life, achieving perfection in life and human welfare during their lifetime. This plant is also known to have been used as a vegetable in several countries. As in Indonesia, especially in Java where the young leaves, inflorescences and stolons are cooked and consumed as vegetables, while in Malaysia, the parts used as food ingredients are the roots and leaves. In its function as a medicinal plant, it is one of the plants used in traditional medicine in China and Indonesia (West Java). This plant can also be used as fish feed.

Agroecology
This plant is usually found growing in the lower layers of dense tropical forests, damp and wet places, rocky places (living attached to rocks), humus soils in forests, on river banks, moor, at an altitude of 300-1,400 m above sea level. It likes moist, well-drained soil conditions, a rich loam texture. Requires lots of water to moderate, and a position in full or partial shade. If exposed to direct sunlight continuously, the leaves will turn brown due to burning.
Morphology
- Roots - fibrous, yellowish white.
- Stems - erect and short, has a round stem shape and is not woody, with a purple to brown color, has an elongated rhizome.
- Leaves - arranged in a rosette, leaf blades shaped like a heart (cordate) to arrows (sagittate), green, sometimes variegated, smooth surface, flat leaf edge, Y-shaped vein pattern, green midrib. Petiole round, green, smooth, sheathed at the bottom, about 50 cm long.
- Flowers - cream or white, male and female flowers are arranged in stemmed inflorescences. The inflorescences are encased in a flower sheath (spatha) shaped like a boat. The lower sheath is whitish green, the upper sheath is cream to greenish yellow. Cob narrowed in the middle, white, measuring 3/4 of the length of the sheath, the top will break off after the end of the anthesis.
- Fruits - berry, green, orange when ripe, fleshy, glossy surface.
- Seeds - whitish oval and many.
Cultivation
Propagated by seeds, stem cutting, and divison.

Treating back pain (lumbago), joint pain (arthralgia), and wounds.
