Overview
Spiral ginger is widely distributed in tropical and subtropical regions in Asia, Africa, and the Americas. the plant is widely cultivated as an ornamental plant.
Vernacular Names
Crepe ginger, Spiral Flag, Spiral Ginger (English), Setawar (Malaysia), Keukand (Hindi). Chengalva Koshta’ (Telegu and Kannada).
Agroecology
Spiral ginger prefers fertile moist loam soil in the shaded, semi-shaded or open areas. The plant grows well in a high humidity climate.
Morphology
- Roots - thick creeping rhizomes.
- Stems - succulent, herbaceous, erect, sub-woody at the base, spirally twisted at the top
- Leaves - green, simple, spirally arranged, alternate, lanceolate, spiral up to stem and elliptic leaf blades.
- Flowers - white, terminal, cup-shaped labellum, clustered in terminal globose heads, flower head with large and shiny brown or red bracts.
- Fruits - red, flattened berries, drop-shaped.
- Seeds - black with a white fleshy aril.
Cultivation
The plant can be propagated generatively through seed and vegetatively through rhizome, stem cuttings, and culm division.
Chemical Constituents
Triterpenoids, phenolic compounds, sterols, monosaccharides, saponins, amino acid, and fatty acids.
Benefits
Spiral ginger is commonly known as an insulin plant as it has Antidiabetic action. the plant is also traditionally used to treat acute pharyngitis, acute tonsillitis, anemia, coughs, fever, leprosy, small pox, cold, dysentery, eye complaints, and syphilis. The plant is also used traditionally as a purgative analgesic, antiadipogenesis, antiangiogenic, antiarthritic, anticancer, antihyperglycemic, antiinflammatory, antioxidant, antinociceptive, antipyretic, antituberculosis, hepatoprotective, and hypolipidemic.
Simplisia
- Cuci bersih daun menggunakan air mengalir.
- Kering anginkan daun, kemudian jemur di bawah sinar matahari selama 9 jam dengan ditutup kain hitam atau sampai kering.
- Simpan simplisa dalam wadah tertutup yang bersih pada suhu ruang.

Traditional Recipes

1. 1. Mengurangi perut kembung
- Cuci 10 g rimpang. Rebus dengan 2 gelas air selama 15 menit kemudian dinginkan. Saring ramuan.
- Minum 2 kali sehari pada pagi hari dan sore hari.

2. 2. Mengatasi gigitan ular
- Cuci 1 batang tabar-tabar. Tumbuk halus, beri air garam 2 sendok makan. Minum air perasan.
- Ampasnya untuk luka bekas gigitan. Balut. Lakukan 2 kali sehari.
