Overview

Diubah menjadi: The native home of the Syzgium is India and East Indies. It is found throughout in India up to an altitude of 1800 meters and its habitat starts from Myanmar and extended to Afghanistan. This plant is also found in other countries like Thailand, Philippines, Madagascar. 

Vernacular Names

Jamblang (Indonesia),  Jamboláo (Brazilian), Hai Nan Pu Tao (Chinese), Kala Jamu (India), Wa-Pa (Thai), Juwat-Juwat (Malaysia), Janboran (Japanese), Duhat (Tagalog-Philippines).

Agroecology

Java plum is a tropical to sub tropical conditions for optimum growth. It grows well from sea-level to 1,200 m but, above 2,000 m it does not fruit but can be grown for its timber. It develops most luxuriantly in regions of heavy rainfall, 2,500–3,500 mm annually. The tree is resistant to coastal high winds and abhors in highly saline, or sodic soils.

Morphology

  • Roots - tap root with a lot of lateral roots.
  • Stem - terete branches and a canopy spread of 10 m.
  • Leaves - opposite, coriaceous, ellipticoblong, 5–15 cm long by 2.5–8 cm wide, acuminate, narrow; pinkish when young; when mature, leathery, glossy, dark-green above, lighter beneath, with conspicuous, yellowish midrib. Petioles are 1 to 2.5 cm long.
  • Flowers - fragrant, in cymose clusters, axillary on flowering branches, occasionally terminal, white or pinkish, 12 mm wide, slightly rounded, caduceous white to rose-pink.
  • Fruits - ovoid to ellipsoid, 2–2.5 cm long, green turning to plae greenish-white to deep purplish-black when ripe, smooth,.
  • Seeds - astringent, juicy, white to pale lavender in color with one large and green seed.

Cultivation

  • Propagated by seed - freshly collected seeds are normally sown in nursery beds at a depth of 20-25 mm during the rainy season and germinate in 2-4 weeks at a rate 20-90%.
  • Propagated can also by air-layering and grafting.

Chemical Constituents

Riboflavin, ascorbic acid, phosphorus, fatty acids, starch, dextrin, phytosterol, tannin, anthocyanins, glucoside, ellagic acid, isoquercetin, kaempferol, myricetin, alkaloid, jambosine, glycoside jambolin or antimellin, ribovlavin, Nicotinic acid, sesquiterpen, terpenes, limonene, myricitine, phyytosterol.

Benefits

Medicinal Uses

  • It is considered astringent, carminative, stomachic, diuretic, anti-diabetic, and anti-diarrheal.
  • Studies have shown anti-diabetic, anti-inflammatory, radioprotective, gastroprotective, antioxidant, CNS (Central Nervous System) depressant, anti-allergic, anti-cancer, antibacterial, and cardioprotective properties, Gastroprtective,  Antiulcerogenic, Hypoglycemic, Hypolipidaemic, Antianaemic, and Radio-protective.

Traditional Uses

  • The whole plant is used as an aid for diabetes mellitus. Take one teaspoon each of honey, black plum juice and amla juice daily in the morning for treating anemia, eliminate sexual weakness, increase memory and eliminate body weakness.
  • Roots are used to treat epilepsy.
  • Decoction of the bark is used as a gargle or mouthwash for gingivitis and mouth ulcerations.
  • Leaves are used for strengthening gums and teeth, treat stomachache, leucorrhoea, skin diseases, strangury, fever, constipation, prevent blood discharges, as poultice for skin problems.
  • The fruit is useful for dysentery and bilious diarrhea. The juice of ripe fruit is used in India for chronic diarrhea, enlargement of spleen and urine retention. Helps to lower excessive salivation.
  • Seeds are used for digestive problems.

Simplisia

  • Cuci bersih kulit batang. Pisahkan antara kulit batang dengan batang bagian dalamnya menggunakan pisau.
  • Keringkan dengan oven pada suhu 45-50 °C selama 4-5 hari.
  • Potong kecil-kecil kulit batang yang kering. Tumbuk hingga menjadi serbuk.

1. Kencing manis

  • Rebus 1 lembar kulit batang jamblang (sebesar telapak tangan) dengan 5 gelas air hingga mendidih dan air berkurang menjadi 3 gelas.
  • Minum 3 kali sehari, masing-masing 1 gelas.
