Overview
It is life natively in tropical America, from Mexico to Brazil, including much of the Caribbean. It is now common in many other parts of the world as well, especially at low altitudes. In West Africa, it is also present, though records are poor. It has been thoroughly naturalized in the tropics. It's also cultivated as an ornamental ground cover plant. It is including as one of the worst invasive species.

Patte canard (French), Nan mei peng qi ju (Chinese), Vedélia (Brazil), Singapoer-madeliefie (South Africa), Kra dum tong (Thailand), Wedelia kuning (Malaysia).
Agroecology
S. trilobata is found at elevations up to 700 m. Plant tops can be destroyed by frost, but with warmer weather, the roots can withstand at least some frost and regrow. Succeeds in full sun to moderate shade, in a sunny location, flowering more strongly. A well-drained soil is favored, but it is very resilient, succeeding in dry and wet conditions, tolerating floods and with standing drought. The plant is very resistant to salt and grows well near the sea.
Morphology
- Stem - green or reddish, rounded, rooting at nodes, 10-30 cm long, ascending, coarsely strigose to spreading hirsute, sometimes subglabrous.
- Leaves - glossy green, medium textured, fleshy, usually 4-9(-18) cm long and 1.5-5 cm wide, obovate-elliptic or lanceolate, irregularly toothed or serrate, usually with a pair of lateral lobes (three lobes), opposite to subopposite, glabrous or sparsely pubescent.
- Flowers - yellow, solitary, arise in the leaf axils at any height but appear to have the most blossoms at about 10 cm above ground level. Peduncles 3-10 cm long, chaffy bracts lanceolate, rigid, ray florets often 8-13 perhead.
- Fruits - inconspicuous, 2 to 4-angled achene,
- Seeds - tuberculate achenes, 4–5 mm long.
Cultivation
- Propagated by seeds.
- Vegetative propagation is by division and tip cuttings.
Chemical Constituents
Sesquiterpene lactones, trilobolid-6-O-isobutyrates A and B, alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, terpenoids, steroids, amino acids, glycosides, tannins, volatile oils, essential oils.
Benefits
- Analgesic, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory properties have been indicated in studies.
- The plant is known for its soothing properties and, to speed up the healing process, can be used topically on minor wounds, sores, and scratches.
- In South America, it is used to treat cold and flu symptoms, fever, and inflammation.
- Traditional medication is used for bronchitis, colds, stomach pains, dysmenorrhea, and fertility enhancer in the Caribbean and Central America.
- Miskito Indians in Nicaragua use leaves to treat kidney problems, colds, stingray bites, snakebite, and amenorrhea.
- Used in the care of menorrhagia in the Dominican Republic.
- In Guyana, a potent decoction is used to treat extreme chest colds. Mixed with Lantana camara tea or syrup used for colds.
- Women in Saint Lucia drink tea from S. trilobata after birth to contracts the uterus and prevents bleeding.
- In childbirth, fruits, leaves, and stems are also used to treat bites, stings, fever and infection.
